EVIL

WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?

With Season 4 of this excellent series now available, I went back to the beginning, and will endeavour to watch all four seasons eventually. Evil, exorcism and ghostly visitations abound in this saga, albeit a little over-the-top at times. If the supernatural is your thing, this one will meet the brief. Kristen Bouchard is a sceptical female clinical psychologist who joins a priest-in-training and a blue-collar contractor as they investigate supposed miracles, demonic possession, and other extraordinary occurrences to see if there’s a scientific explanation or if something truly supernatural is at work. This is very creepy stuff and you’ll be covering your eyes quite a bit as it can be a little on the gory side, although this will depend on your blood splatter threshold. Creator Michelle King is also behind The Good Fight and The Good Wife. Watch out for Australia’s Patrick Brammall as Andy Bouchard.

PENNY DREADFUL

WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?

There are three seasons of this intriguing series for your viewing pleasure. The story follows explorer Sir Malcolm Murray, American gunslinger Ethan Chandler, scientist Victor Frankenstein and medium Vanessa Ives who unite to combat supernatural threats in Victorian London. There is an interesting direction explored with characters Frankenstein and Dorian Gray, who are well known to viewers, but a different aspect unfolds. This is gothic horror at its very best. Apparently, there will be no Season 4, which is disappointing as there were a few loose ends that could have been resolved. The ensemble cast attached is superb.

A GENTLEMAN IN MOSCOW

WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?

Having not read Amor Towles novel of the same name, I had no expectations with this drama series, except that it starred Ewan McGregor as Alexander Rostov. His is an understated, but riveting performance. In 1922, Rostov is deemed an unrepentant aristocrat by a Bolshevik tribunal, the count is sentenced to house arrest in the Metropol, a grand hotel across the street from the Kremlin. He is an indomitable man of erudition and wit, has never worked a day in his life, and must now live in an attic room while some of the most tumultuous decades in Russian history are unfolding outside the hotel’s doors. Unexpectedly, his reduced circumstances provide him a doorway into a much larger world of emotional discovery.

ELSBETH

WATCH NOW

WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?

Having visited NYC on a number of occasions, due to my daughter being in residence, and as I’ve come to know the city during that time, and to love the place, this comedy series, which is a spin-off of The Good Wife, was essential viewing. Emmy-winner Carrie Preston stars as Elsbeth Tascioni, an unconventional attorney, who gives her singular point of view to make observations to catch criminals alongside the NYPD. Elsbeth is such a delightful character, and you are immediately taken in by her positive attitude to the city and those she works with, even though her appointment is unpopular in some quarters. Her eccentricity does apparently grate with some viewers, but I found this to be enjoyable entertainment

WHY WOMEN KILL

WATCH NOW

WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?

This dark comedy anthology series examines how the roles of women have changed, but how their reaction to betrayal has not. There are two seasons available for viewing. The first season follows three women, each from a different recent era, who each reside in a certain Pasadena mansion. All three learn of their respective husband’s infidelity during their time in the house. The second season focuses on one storyline with Alma Fillcot, a plain jane middle-aged housewife who decides to join a Garden Club. Each time a turning point is reached when murder is a justifiable outcome. This is a refreshing series, with a different approach to the normal crime genre. Thoroughly enjoyable.

TULSA KING

WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?

I know I will possibly be admitting an unpopular opinion when I say that I have never been an avid fan of Sylvester Stallone, so it was with a little trepidation that I decided to view this crime drama series. However, I have been pleasantly surprised by the story, the cast of characters and Stallone. Plus, we get to explore the Tulsa area, which is different from the usual setting. Stallone stars as New York Mafia capo Dwight “The General” Manfredi, who is released from prison after 25 years and exiled by his boss to set up shop in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Realising that his mob family might not have his best interests in mind, Dwight slowly builds a “crew” from a group of unlikely characters, to help him establish a new criminal empire in a place that to him might as well be another planet. Highly entertaining with a great soundtrack to accompany the action.

SAVE ME

WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?

Here we have a gripping thriller series from South Korea, which itself has a real cult problem so this drama will resonate for some viewers. The story follows Im Sang-mi and her family who move to the suburb of Muji County, after her father’s business fails. The religious cult Goseonwon has a large number of followers. The cult disguises itself as a peaceful church, but dark secrets, torture, violence and murder lurk underneath. After a tragedy befalls the family, the cult’s leader lures her parents into Goseonwon. Despite Sang-Mi’s repeated objections to something wrong with the cult, her father is fully brainwashed. An entertaining, albeit sinister, drama with an excellent cast.

NATHAN FOR YOU

WATCH NOW

WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?

This satirical docu-reality comedy series has been around for some time, but some how had escaped my attention. It was co-created by and stars Canadian comedian Nathan Fielder, as he uses his business degree and life experiences to help real small businesses turn a profit. But because of his unorthodox approach, Nathan’s genuine efforts to do good often draw real people into an experience far beyond what they signed up for. Okay, this series is very popular I have discovered, and it is entertaining and hilarious at times, but I found Nathan to be a tad annoying. But you, on the other hand, may find his antics highly amusing.
