THE SWIMMERS
WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?
This is truly a remarkable story and worth viewing as the Olympics get underway. Sisters Yusra and Sarah Mardini fled their home country of Syria in 2015 during the civil war. They journeyed to Lebanon and then on to Turkey where they arranged to be smuggled into Greece on a dinghy. However, in the middle of the Aegean Sea the engine of the overcrowded dinghy cut out and the pair, plus two others who could swim, were responsible for saving the lives of those on board. Just a year after their harrowing experience Yusra competed in two swimming events at the Rio Olympics as part of the Refugee Olympic team. A moving film of endurance and determination.

HIT MAN
WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?
Loved this one, despite a few plot flaws. Gary Johnson is the most sought-after professional killer in New Orleans. To his clients, he is like something out of a movie: the mysterious gun for hire. But if you pay him to rub out a cheating spouse or an abusive boss, you’d better watch out, he works for the cops. When he breaks protocol to help a desperate woman trying to flee an abusive husband, he finds himself becoming one of his false personas, falling for the woman and flirting with becoming a criminal. There’s a cool soundtrack to accompany the action. Directed and co-written by Richard Linklater.

INHERITANCE
WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?
A very quirky, and entertaining comedy-murder mystery, which will have you laughing. When an eccentric inventor and gameshow host suddenly passes away, a family of bickering oddballs gathers with hopes of inheriting his fortune. To everyone’s surprise, the unconventional uncle prepared one last game for them to determine who would receive his inheritance. It involves a series of tasks and puzzles, testing their ability to reconcile and work together. Relaxing, light-hearted viewing.

OUTSTANDING: A COMEDY REVOLUTION
WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?
I do admire anyone who is prepared to perform on the comedy circuit. I cannot begin to imagine the harassment they endure to achieve their dream. This documentary explores the history of LGBTQ+ standup comedy, considering its importance as an instrument for social change over the past five decades. Many who performed in the past did so in fear of how the public would react if they knew they were gay. An informative film.

A FAMILY AFFAIR
WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?
This romantic comedy definitely won’t win any Oscars, but it’s not too bad. If you want a light-hearted hour or so looking at Zac Efron, then this is for you. An unexpected liaison triggers comic consequences for a young woman, her mother, and her boss, grappling with the complications of love, sex, and identity. There seems to be a mood in the air for the older woman/younger man scenario in films of late. How refreshing is that!

MAHARAJ
WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?
This is a compelling drama from India, based on a real-life historic court case of 1862, where a bold journalist questions the immoral behaviour of a powerful religious leader from the Vaishnav sect. The resulting defamation lawsuit became a landmark case in Indian legal history and society.
