A MAN IN FULL

WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?

Jeff Daniels is brilliant as Charlie Croker in this drama series adapted from Tom Wolfe’s novel. So much so, that he is intensely unlikeable in this role. It’s an excellent series, but I found everyone extremely obnoxious, except for Croker’s son. Croker, once a college football star, now a late-middle-aged Atlanta conglomerate king whose outsize ego has at last hit up against reality. Charlie has a 29,000 acre quail-shooting plantation, a young and demanding second wife, and a half-empty office complex with a staggering load of debt. He’s heading for a fall as his enemies begin to circle. A bit of trivia with this one is that Charlie Croker was Michael Caine’s character’s name in The Italian Job. Viewers were not happy with the finale, which I fully understand.

What a joy this is! If a slow-paced, quirky Irish series is what you’re looking for, here it is. The story revolves around a group of podcasters who set out to investigate the mysterious disappearance of three strangers in an idyllic Irish town. But when they start to pull the strings, they find a story much bigger and stranger than they could have imagined. There are many threads to this plot, which can be somewhat confusing. Wonderful ensemble cast and an abundance of Irish humour sets this comedy thriller above the normal fare.

KATLA

WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?

An excellent drama fantasy series from Iceland.  One year after the violent eruption of the subglacial volcano Katla, the peace and tranquillity in the small town of Vik is dramatically disturbed. Everyone in the town is affected in some way by what is occurring. This is a slow-paced, well-written story with a talented ensemble cast attached. The setting is stark and foreboding. The finale throws up more questions than answers. Volcanic eruptions are a regular occurrence for Icelanders so the ash covering every surface is very realistic. Definitely a viewing must.

WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?

This is a disturbing drama thriller, which was unexpectedly riveting viewing. After having a heart attack, a teenager gets a heart transplant to survive. She subsequently becomes consumed by the mystery surrounding her life-saving heart. As she gets closer to uncovering the truth about her donor’s sudden death, she begins to take on the characteristics of the deceased donor. Apparently, there will be no Season 2 of this one, which is a tad annoying as the finale doesn’t really tie up the mystery at the “heart” of this drama. Despite that, it is worth a look.

WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?

The talented Brit Marling creates, co-writes and stars in this intriguing sci-fi, supernatural series. The compelling story delves into the inexplicable reappearance of Prairie Johnson who had gone missing seven years ago. The previously blind Johnson returns home, now in her late 20s and with her sight restored. While many believe she is miracle, others worry that she could be dangerous. This description is only a fraction of what is taking place. To appreciate the complexity of this tale, a viewing is essential. There is interdimensional travel, near-death experiences and a scientist who manipulates those who have been there. Sadly, Netflix decided not to renew this excellent series due to costs. I believe they could have funnelled money into this project from the many inane, irrelevant and nonsensical shows that are, for some reason, still available. If a drama of such quality can be cancelled in favour of inferior content, Netflix needs to examine its business structure. One of the best series streaming anywhere!

INNOCENT MAN

WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?

If you watch a number of crime documentaries, you will find a common thread that is prevalent, and that is wrongful arrest and injustice. Conviction appears to be the priority, rather than investigation. This story tells of Ron Williamson, a man who sat on Oklahoma’s death row for 11 years for a crime he didn’t commit. Dennis Fritz and Ron Williamson convicted in 1988, in Pontotoc County, Oklahoma, of the murder of Debra Sue Carter. They were exonerated and released in April 1999. Based on John Grisham’s “The Innocent Man: Murder and Injustice in a Small Town.”

Once again, in this crime docuseries the total incompetence of police and their association with the Catholic Church has contributed to the ruination of the lives of victims. It explores the unsolved murder of Sister Catherine Cesnik and the horrific secrets and pain that linger nearly five decades after her death. After disappearing on Nov. 7, 1969, Cesnik’s body was found nearly two months later, but to this day, the killer remains unnamed. In the ’90s, the case returned to the spotlight after one of Cesnik’s former students accused the high school’s chaplain of sexual abuse. A confronting documentary.
