THE PERFECT COUPLE

WATCH NOW

WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?

This crime drama has a talented ensemble cast attached and is great viewing, although I did get a little annoyed with some of the selfish, privileged characters as events unfolded. The Otis-Winbury wedding promises to be an event to remember: the groom’s wealthy parents have spared no expense to host a lavish ceremony at their oceanfront estate. When a body is discovered in Nantucket Harbor just hours before the ceremony, everyone in the wedding party is suddenly a suspect. It’s worth viewing but doesn’t come up to expectations.

INTO THE FIRE: THE LOST DAUGHTER

WATCH NOW

WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?

Tragic circumstances are revealed in this documentary series where a tenacious mother unravels the complex mystery surrounding the 1989 disappearance of the daughter she had placed for adoption, with additional victims emerging as the police tenaciously pursue their suspect. A true crime story with a different scenario to the usual fare.

MONSTERS: THE LYLE AND ERIK MENENDEZ STORY

WATCH NOW

WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?

Disturbing viewing, to say the least. The second instalment in this anthology series centres on murderers Lyle and Erik Menendez who shot their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez, multiple times, in 1989. The brothers, who argued that the killing was a result of years-long abuse, were convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison.

BILLIONAIRE ISLAND

WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?

Fish, fish, fish – as a very famous Cat once exclaimed. Viewers of Red Dwarf will be familiar with these words. This is another worthy series from Norway, and it is all about salmon. I’ve learned a lot about salmon, I must say. The Lange and Meyer family are two families in a small coastal community who are sworn enemies in the global salmon industry. They are ruthless when it comes to protecting their interests. Yes, it doesn’t sound all that exciting, but it did hold my attention. As one critic put it, it’s Succession with fish.

JACK WHITEHALL: FATHERHOOD WITH MY FATHER

WATCH NOW

WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?

I doubt there are many expectant fathers who have gone to the lengths that Jack Whitehall does here to support his partner during her pregnancy. I must say that I find father Michael Whitehall far more amusing than son Jack. His anecdotes and pragmatic view of life never fails to make me laugh. The series follows Jack and Michael on a path of discovery and adventure ahead of Jack’s impending fatherhood, with mother Hilary joining in. I loved the Whitehall’s home video footage as a young family. Highly entertaining.

MIDNIGHT AT THE PERA PALACE

WATCH NOW

WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?

In this Turkish time travel historical drama series, based on the Charles King novel, the outright star of is the Pera Palace Hotel. It is today regarded as an important historical building and was the first modern hotel in Istanbul to have electricity during the late Ottoman period. It is said that Agatha Christie stayed there when she supposedly disappeared for a period of time. Room 411 is named after her. Esra is a journalist looking for her next big story. She sets off to visit the Pera Palace, known for both its intriguing history and its mysterious supernatural happenings, and is sent back to 1919 where she meets key figures from the past. Another example of the high calibre of drama coming from Turkey recently.

EVERYTHING CALLS FOR SALVATION

WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?

In this interesting Italian drama series, based on Daniele Mencarelli’s novel, we follow 20-year-old Daniele who, after a psychotic crisis, wakes up in the dormitory of a psychiatric ward together with five unlikely roommates with whom he thinks he has nothing in common, pressured by doctors who want to rummage in his brain, and looked after by nurses who seem cynical and disinterested. But seven days are long and what at first seemed like a sentence slowly turns into an intense and formative experience. Wonderfully drawn characters. Funny and emotional, even though the subject is the fragility of those suffering from mental health.

NOBODY WANTS THIS

WATCH NOW

WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?

This romantic comedy series follows the unexpected relationship between an unconventional rabbi and an irreverent, outspoken, agnostic sex podcaster. However, as Joanne and Noah begin getting to know each other, their extremely different lives are exposed. And then there’s their meddling families… especially Noah’s mother. Whoa! No blonde shiksa is getting their hands on her precious boy. She’s a force to be reckoned with. Relaxing viewing, which will see you possibly watching the whole series all at once. I’ve seen the word delightful being bandied about on many occasions. So, if delightful is your thing, this one’s for you. The story is loosely based on creator Erin Foster’s real-life experiences.
