KINDS OF KINDNESS

WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?

This triptych of bizarre stories from Poor Things director Yorgos Lanthimos is an odd one to find on Disney. I watched the first two in the sequence, but didn’t have the patience to view the final piece. There is a message here I presume about what one will do for love and to please those who are close to you, but I doubt the majority of people would go to these extremes. It begins with a man without choice who tries to take control of his own life; a policeman who is alarmed that his wife who was missing-at-sea has returned and seems a different person; and a woman determined to find a specific someone with a special ability, who is destined to become a prodigious spiritual leader. I’ll leave this one with you as I’m not really sure what was going on. Heads up to the squeamish among you, it’s a little gory in places, with lots of blood.

THE CONTESTANT

WATCH NOW

WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?

I’m not normally a reality TV viewer. I see snippets when my sons visit and take over the remote, but I’m not really into paying much attention to those who are willing to be humiliated for money. I am aware of the lengths that some will go to, to achieve their goal. In this documentary, a Japanese reality TV star is left naked in a room for more than a year, tasked with filling out magazine sweepstakes to earn food and clothing. Although Nasubi could have left at any time, he stayed for months, determined to complete his mission. But he didn’t realise was that his experiences were being broadcast to over 15 million people in a TV show called Denpa Shonen: A Life in Prizes.

THE SUPREMES AT EARL’S ALL-YOU-CAN-EAT

WATCH NOW

WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?

Let’s get back to a few more Disney-like movies. First up, this is not a film about The Supremes with Diana Ross. It follows a trio of best friends dubbed “The Supremes” by Earl, the owner of the local drugstore, where everyone gathered to dance and hang out, and perhaps meet the love of your life. Odette, Barbara Jean and Clarice’s friendship began as teenagers and endured for decades, have weathered everything through marriage and children, happiness and blues. The story is told through the different lives of the three women and those who surround them. A good, solid movie with an excellent ensemble cast and soundtrack.

SUNCOAST

WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?

This gem is a semi-autobiographical film based on director Laura Chinn’s real-life experience coping with her brother’s brain cancer. Laura Linney is superb as Kristine, a strong-willed mother who, with her daughter Doris, must face the reality that her son must be put into a specialised hospital. The story is told from Doris’s point of view as she struggles to please her mother, take care of her brother and try to be a normal teenager. She strikes up an unlikely friendship with an eccentric activist amidst protests surrounding one of the most landmark medical cases of all time. Woody Harrelson is, as always, superb as activist Paul Warren. Loved this one.

JIM HENSON: IDEA MAN

WATCH NOW

WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?

What an impact this man had on our lives. With three children, I have watched The Muppet Show for decades, and with two nieces prior to that. I’d say I’m a pretty seasoned Muppet viewer. This documentary directed by Ron Howard tells of Jim Henson, the man who inspired so many children all over the world. It features interviews of fans of Jim Henson’s work, interspersed with footage from his works, including Wilkins and Wontkins Commercials, that were previously lost. Loved this one and learned so much about Jim, the man that everyone loved. He was taken from us too soon.

THE MUPPET MOVIE

WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?

And that documentary led me to take another look at this wonderful film, which our family have been watching together forever. The Rainbow Connection still moves me to tears every time, and I hope to find it one day soon, although I have a feeling I may have already. A road movie like no other where Kermit the Frog is approached by a Hollywood agent to audition for the chance of a lifetime. Kermit takes this chance for his big break as he makes the journey to Hollywood. Along the way, Kermit comes across several quirky new friends including comedic Fozzie Bear, beautiful but feisty Miss Piggy, and the Great Gonzo. But Kermit must also watch out for ruthless Doc Hopper. “Life’s like a movie, write your own ending, keep believing, keep pretending.”

WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?

One for the teens, and older lovers of fantasy. The story follows Red, daughter of the Queen of Hearts, and Chloe, daughter of Cinderella, as they team up to save Auradon by traveling back in time using the White Rabbit’s pocket watch, to stop an event that would cause grave consequences. If only we all had access to that watch!

WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?

This one is for all you storm troopers out there. This documentary chronicles the making of the original Star Wars trilogy from start to finish. We get some background on George Lucas’ start in the business and then continue with the making of Star Wars (1977), Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi (1983). The visual/special effects and financial problems are explained as well as casting, editing, scoring and releasing the films with tons of archival footage and interviews with plenty of cast & crew members.

APOLLO: MISSIONS TO THE MOON

WATCH NOW

WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?

In the late 1960s, the United States space program neared its goal of landing a man on the Moon, but it was a journey that began years before. This is the story of Project Apollo – 12 years, 12 manned-missions, one impossible goal. With rare archival footage and audio, this remarkable documentary sheds new light on an incredible time in human history.

WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?

Howard Ashman grew up in an average Jewish family in Baltimore with an extraordinary love for musical theatre. After college, he opened a theatre in a derelict section of New York and struggled to put on shows, until his adaptation of Roger Corman’s film becomes a huge Off-Off-Broadway hit and catapults him into the limelight.
