Now that we’re settling into February, our team has put together a selection of our favorite movies on PrimeVideo this month. Whether a cozy night for two – or one – check out these great titles.

Anticipation and hype preceded the release of this drama due in part to the excellent ensemble cast attached. The focus is on Oliver Quick, a student at Oxford who becomes fixated with Felix Catton, an aristocratic student, which immediately brought to mind Brideshead Revisited. But this story veers onto a far more sinister path than that. The man of the moment, Barry Keoghan stars as Quick, who is invited to Salburn, Felix’s eccentric family’s extravagant estate, for a summer that no one will ever forget. Solid performances in a drama that will have you riveted until the last frame. Director Emerald Fennell is a well-known English actress, filmmaker, and writer.

This turned out to be a lot better than first expected. The story follows Nate and Susan, a married millennial couple in their mid-twenties. When Susan suddenly realises she’s miserable and wants a divorce, Nate packs his bags and heads for the nearest hotel. Nate struggles with his new single life, but when a recent divorcee, Katie, offers to help Nate organise a glitzy “divorce party” to celebrate his new status, Nate starts to warm to his new life and finds new friends and new wisdom. It’s not going to win any Oscars, but it is an entertaining comedy for the most part.

It’s possibly never a good move to go back to your hometown expecting that it and the people you knew have remained the same. This is the never the case. Time moves on, as they say. And it definitely has when workaholic Ally reminisces with her ex, Sean, and starts to question everything about the person she’s become. Things only get more confusing when she meets Cassidy, his fiancée, who reminds her of the person she used to be. This one is a bit predictable, but it does go off on a bit of a tangent towards the end. Haley Joel Osment has certainly grown quite a bit!

This is one of those low-budget films that is not going to win any awards but ends up being entertaining in its own way. The story follows Jack, who is preparing to make a long drive to his friend’s wedding. Just before he leaves, the wedding couple asks him to give a lift to Samantha, one of the bridesmaids. When he picks her up, he realises that he’s met her before and that meeting left him with bad memories. During their travel their animosities subside while they experience a road trip with odd meetings and a sudden destination change. A highlight for me were Jack’s parents, who are your typical embarrassing mum and dad, who say whatever they think, about every topic, regardless of who is present.

This is one of those indie films that takes one by surprise. In the summer of 1999, Kol, a 17-year-old Serbian-born Australian amateur ballroom dancer experiences an impromptu and intense 24-hour romance with Adam, his friend’s older brother. Director and writer Goran Stolevski is a Macedonian-Australian man whose own memories of growing up as a queer teen in the 90s inspired the screenplay. This is a moving film about experiencing love for the first time when you least expect it. So happy I found this one.

There are sinister undertones at work in this drama, but in the end love from an unexpected source does triumph. Honest Australian sheep-farmer John Woldring leads an isolated life. Suddenly a woman turns up at night, frightened out of her wits. He takes her in, grumpily. Gradually he finds out she’s an Afghan refugee, looking for other illegally emigrated relatives. He tries to help her quest, but they soon experience the human traffickers on her track, and they are better connected than John could guess. Suspense and romance combine to make this excellent viewing.

This romantic drama all takes place before Jean Shrimpton became famous for donning the scandalous mini skirt, which of course we all started wearing. In 1962 budding young photographer David Bailey gets a contract working for Vogue magazine. For his first shoot he picks inexperienced teenage model Jean Shrimpton, who moves in with Bailey, despite his being married. To capture a youth readership, Bailey and Jean are sent on a photo shoot to New York with the magazine’s fashion editor Lady Clare Rendlesham, played by the wonderful Helen McCrory, who is incensed when Bailey defies her orders and shoots impressively unorthodox photos. This sets the scene for one of the most famous partnerships of the Swinging Sixties. Ah, what fun we had back in those days.

For the last Valentine’s Day offering, we step back in time to the man that many had romantic fantasies about back in the day. Howard Hawks directs Cary Grant as Walter Burns, a newspaper editor who will try every trick in the book to stop his star reporter and ex-wife, Hildy, from quitting and remarrying. Enter the biggest story in years which includes true love, a bumbling sheriff and a corrupt mayor. Will the thrill of the chase get Hildy to stay? This movie is lots of fun, but the dialogue is so rapid-fire that you’re a nervous wreck by the end of it. I’m not sure what the reason for this is, and I don’t know how the actors remembered their lines with such a quick delivery. Unusual, to say the least.
