BOY SWALLOWS UNIVERSE
WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?
This is a superb, albeit confronting, drama series adapted from Trent Dalton’s novel, somewhat based on his own life. It’s set in 1985 Brisbane, where Eli Bell’s life is complicated: a lost father, a mute brother, a junkie mum, a heroin-dealer stepfather, and a notorious crim for a babysitter. He’s just trying to follow his heart and understand what being a good man means, but fate keeps throwing obstacles in his way, including legendary Brisbane drug dealer Tytus Broz. Now Eli’s life will get a whole lot more serious. The book is excellent and so is this series. Absolutely loved it.

FOOL ME ONCE
WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?
This crime drama series stars Michelle Keegan as Maya Stern who is trying to come to terms with the brutal murder of her husband Joe. When she installs a nanny-cam to keep an eye on her young daughter, she is shocked to see a man she recognises in her house: her husband, whom she thought was dead. Detective Sergeant Sami Kierce leads the homicide investigation into Joe’s death while grappling with his own secrets. Overall, this is a good story, although there are some scenarios which remain unexplained and don’t really come to any conclusion.
DIRECTOR:
DAVID MOORE, NIMER RASHED
CAST
MICHELLE KEEGAN ADEEL AKHTAR, RICHARD ARMITAGE, EMMETT J SCANLAN, JOANNA LUMLEY, THEA TAYLOR-MORGAN
THE ONE
WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?
This Sci-fi crime drama series, based on John Marrs’ novel takes internet dating to a whole new level. One simple mouth swab is all it takes. A quick DNA test to find your perfect partner, the one you’re genetically made for. A decade after the scientific discovery that everyone has a gene they share with just one other person, millions have taken the test, desperate to find true love. Now, five more people meet their Match. But even soul mates have secrets. And some are more shocking and deadlier than others. So, yes, a supposedly fool-proof was of finding your one and only. It’s not brilliant, but it is worth a look due to the subject matter.

LUDIK
WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?
Ludik is the first Afrikaans series streamed by Netflix. The Mummy’s Arnold Vosloo stars as Daan Ludik, a successful furniture salesman in Pretoria, but diamond smuggler on the side. When details of his smuggling operation reach the South African mafia, and a member of his family is kidnapped, Daan is forced to use his furniture business to transport guns into Central Africa. With his family life in turmoil, Daan’s resourcefulness and priorities are constantly challenged as he risks exposure, losing his family, jail time and death. It’s not brilliant, but it worth viewing, especially as there are few series set in South Africa.
DIRECTOR:
IAN GABRIEL, HAROLD HOLSCHER
CAST
ARNOLD VOSLOO, PIETER VORSTER, JANDRE LE ROUX, INGE GOOSEN, SEAN CAMERON MICHAEL, LEA VIVIER, ZANE MEAS
DETECTIVE FORST
WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?
In this Polish crime series, the spectacular Tatra Mountains will become an arena of brutal murder. The investigation is carried out by a cynical but effective policeman, Wiktor Forst. His maverick approach to the job gets him fired. He teams up with a journalist to solve the series of brutal murders, working outside of the system. This is interesting because of its location, but it definitely isn’t perfect.
DIRECTOR:
DANIEL JAROSZEK
CAST
BORYS SZYC, ANDREJ BIENIAS, ZUZANNA SAPORZNIKOW, KAMILLA BAAR, SZYMON WROBLEWSKI, MAGDA DEBICKA, ARTUR BARCIS
CRIMINAL: UK
WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?
There are two seasons of this superb police procedural drama series. There is an excellent ensemble cast attached and talented actors portraying the suspects who end up in the police interview suite where the focus is on the intense mental conflict at play. Each episode is an individual psychological drama. I must say David Tennant in Season 1 and in Season 2 The Big Bang’s Kunal Nayyar were highlights for me. Brilliant acting from both.
DIRECTOR:
JIM FIELD SMITH
CAST
KATHERINE KELLY, LEE INGLEBY, ROCHENDA SANDALL, SHUBHAM SARAF, MARK STANLEY, NICHOLAS PINNOCK, AYMEN HAMDOUCHI
THE BROTHERS SUN
WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?
This is refreshing in that the majority of the cast is Asian. The action-comedy story tells of Taipei gangster Charles Sun who has finally settled into his life as a ruthless killer, with a side hobby as a TV chef. But when his father is shot by a mysterious assassin, he must prepare to journey back to L.A. to protect his mother and his utterly unaware younger brother Bruce who has grown up as an ordinary American boy. With Taiwanese assassins everywhere, this is action-packed, but there is a lot of humour as well. Excellent entertainment.
DIRECTOR:
KEVIN TANCHAROEN, VIET NGUYEN
CAST
MICHELLE YEOH, JUSTIN CHIEN, SAM SONG LI, JOON LEE, HIGHDEE KUAN, ALICE HEWKIN, JENNY YANG, RODNEY TO, ALEXIS RHEE
LOUDERMILK
WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?
A very funny comedy series from Peter Farrelly stars Ron Livingston as Sam Loudermilk, a recovering alcoholic and substance-abuse counsellor with a bad attitude. Although he has his drinking under control, Loudermilk discovers that when your life is a mess, getting clean is the easy part. Loved this entertaining comedy.
DIRECTOR:
PETER FARRELLY, BOBBY FARRELLY
CAST
RON LIVINGSTON, WILL SASSO, ANJA SAVCIC, BRIAN REGAN, JACKIE FLYNN, TIMOTHY WEBBER, RICKY BLITT, SAM BOB
AMERICAN NIGHTMARE
WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?
You’ll have to watch this crime documentary to see the total incompetence of police, which can ruin the lives of victims. The fact that no one is held responsible for the injustice is incredible. One officer involved even receives an award for good policing. It is totally beyond belief. After a harrowing home invasion and kidnapping in 2015, a couple is accused of staging the ordeal when the woman reappears. Denise Huskins and Aaron Quinn’s lives were destroyed by these lies. A confronting documentary.
DIRECTOR:
BERNADETTE HIGGINS, FELICITY MORRIS
JEFFREY EPSTEIN: FILTHY RICH
WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?
We all know the story, but this revealing documentary is told through the stories of survivors. Leading up to his 2019 arrest, mysterious tycoon Jeffrey Epstein was accused of abusing women and underage girls for decades, assembling a network of enablers, like his partner, Ghislaine Maxwell, to help carry out and cover up his crimes. Epstein came from humble beginnings yet managed to lie and manipulate his way to the top of the financial world. He eventually gained tremendous wealth and power while running an international sex trafficking ring. By revealing their emotional scars, some for the very first time, the sisterhood of survivors intend to stop predators – and the American justice system – from silencing the next generation.
