BECKHAM

WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?

My knowledge of David Beckham outside football is limited, except that he is married to Victoria aka Posh Spice. I knew little about his early playing years or how he got his start at Manchester United. I did know of his red card moment during the World Cup, which I thought was totally uncalled for, but I didn’t realise how abominably he was treated by UK fans, until I viewed this documentary. To quote Bill Shankley “football is not a matter of life and death, it’s far more important than that.” With never-before-seen footage, this honest and open-minded docuseries follows David Beckham’s meteoric rise from humble beginnings to global football stardom. He’s not as egotistical as I expected. His closet is immaculate… he can come and organise mine any day.

THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER

WATCH NOW

WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?

Loosely adapted from various stories of Edgar Allan Poe by Mike Flanagan, this series is, and I don’t use this word often, remarkable. It is captivating viewing, and I sat up until all hours to watch in its entirety. The fortunes of siblings Roderick and Madeline Usher were made through Fortunato Pharmaceuticals, a company whose products are often under scrutiny due to health concerns. Assistant DA C. Auguste Dupin is determined to land a conviction and his case against Fortunato and the Ushers has gone to trial. Now, right in the middle of the trial, Roderick’s children are dying under mysterious circumstances. Roderick Usher knows who/what is behind the deaths and meets with Dupin to reveal all. It is gory and bloody at times, but not gratuitously so. This is possibly the best series of the year… but the next one on this list is also a contender.

WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?

UK actor Stephen Graham would have to one of the most exceptional over the past decades. In this Sci-Fi thriller he stars as Mannix, a character which appears across different time frames. The story revolves around a murder in Whitechapel, which four different detectives are trying to solve in different time periods: 1890s overachiever Edmond Hillinghead, dashing 1940s adventurer Karl Whiteman, kickass female 2020s Detective Sergeant Shahara Hasan and Maplewood, an amnesiac from post-apocalyptic 2050. Eventually it is revealed that there is a more sinister connection to each murder. This series is also a contender for best of the year. An excellent crime drama, but you do have to pay attention. A clever creation by Paul Tomalin based on Si Spencer’s novel.

DEAR CHILD (Germany)

WATCH NOW

WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?

This is a complex tale which begins with what seems like a simple scenario. Be aware that there are disturbingly graphic scenes. The story tells of Lena who lives in complete isolation together with the two children Hannah and Jonathan in a highly secured home. They eat their meals, go to the toilet and to bed at precisely prescribed times. They obey to everything he says. Until the young woman manages to escape. After a near fatal car accident, she is hospitalised, accompanied by Hannah. But the true extent of this nightmare is revealed with the arrival of Lena’s parents at the hospital the same night. They have been searching for her for 13 years. But all is not as it appears. Great viewing from Germany.

BURNING BODY (Spain)

WATCH NOW

WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?

This crime series is based on true events known as “el Crimen de la Guardia Urbana,” which means the crime of the Urban Guard. In 2017 it hit the headlines in Spain. The story unfolds when the body of a man appears charred inside a car in the Foix reservoir, in Barcelona. It is discovered to be Pedro, a police officer. The event quickly arouses the interest of public opinion, and more so as the investigation reveals a network of toxic relationships, deceit, violence and sexual scandals involving Pedro and two of his fellow police officers: his partner Rosa and her ex-boyfriend, Albert. As it is a true story, it is interesting viewing. However, one annoying aspect is the soundtrack, with pop songs being inserted over dramatic sequences. There is a documentary about Rosa Peral also on Netflix, Rosa Peral’s Tapes.

GANGS OF OSLO (Norway)

WATCH NOW

WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?

As with any series where gangs are involved, there is violence and blood, but it’s not incessant as with some US versions of series. The story follows policeman Moaz Ibrahim who is forced into living a dangerous double life with the criminal gang Enemiez as an attempt to keep his shady past hidden from the outside world. The leader of the gang, Rami, is on the run, but he and Moaz have been childhood friends. Rami contacts Moaz to help him with inside information or face exposure. A very tricky situation for any policeman to be in. Norwegian series are always worth watching, with good acting and well-written scenarios.

COPENHAGEN COWBOY (Danish)

WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?

This supernatural noir thriller is a strange one, quite bizarre in a David Lynch kind of way. The lighting, colours and misty shots are a very Lynch. It was created and directed by Nicolas Winding Refn for Netflix, his first Danish-language work since Pusher 3. The story follows Miu, a young enigmatic renegade with various psychic abilities. She becomes involved with the criminal underworld, encountering various adversaries. At first it is unclear what her motives are, but they do eventually surface… sort of. It is entertaining for all it’s weirdness, but I’m still not sure what it was all about. I may have to return to it. Oh, and there are pigs involved, and not in a good way.

WHO KILLED JILL DANDO? (Documentary)

WATCH NOW

WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?

This in-depth documentary revisits the shocking 1999 murder of beloved TV presenter Jill Dando, which continues to mystify experts and the public as despite a massive investigation, the murder remains unsolved. A local man, Barry George, was convicted and imprisoned for the murder, but after eight years in prison he was acquitted following an appeal and retrial. Although Jill Dando may not be well known outside of the UK, this is still an interesting story with interviews with family, colleagues and friends who are still waiting for answers.

SPY OPS (Documentary)

WATCH NOW

WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH?

This series is not perfect by any means, but if you’re into espionage, spies and how it all works… or doesn’t, it may be of interest. I found it intriguing, but I’ve always enjoyed a bit of subterfuge, deception and deceit. Here we have intelligence operatives from MI6 to the CIA share insider stories of spy craft, Cold War campaigns, and coups carried out by covert agents. I’m sure they’re not sharing everything, but enough to keep one interested. Of course, most of it leads to mayhem and the death of innocent victims with no one facing justice for any of it.
