Episode 1 - ZodThrown into the Phantom Zone, a Kryptonian jail created by his biological father, Jor-El (voiced by recurring guest star Terence Stamp), Clark (series star Tom Welling) finds himself without powers and surrounded by revenge-seeking criminals sent away by Jor-El. Meanwhile, having taken over Lex's (series star Michael Rosenbaum) body, Zod keeps Lana (series star Kristin Kreuk) captive, demanding that she give him an heir, and begins his plans to turn Earth into a Krypton-like planet using the alien ship's hard drive. After Lois (series star Erica Durance) and Martha's (series star Annette O'Toole) airplane crashes near the Fortress of Solitude, Jor-El tells Martha how to kill Zod. Meanwhile, at The Daily Planet, Chloe (series star Allison Mack) reunites with an old flame, Jimmy Olsen (recurring guest star Aaron Ashmore - "Veronica Mars"). Series star John Glover appears as Lionel Luthor. |
Episode 2 - SneezeAs Clark overworks himself to clean up the destruction done by Zod, he develops the Kryptonian version of a head cold. After some very destructive sneezes, Clark discovers that he possesses a new power: super breath! Meanwhile, Lois lands a job at The Inquisitor, the local tabloid, and Lana moves in with Lex. Lex's fears that someone is following him quickly prove true when he is kidnapped. |
Episode 3 - WitherStill guilt-ridden about the destruction he caused while he was controlled by Zod, Lex throws a charity costume ball for the town and hires THE ALL-AMERICAN REJECTS (themselves) to perform. Lois reluctantly agrees to be billionaire Oliver Queen's (recurring guest star Justin Hartley) date to the event. Meanwhile, Clark and Chloe pursue a female creature that plants seeds in male human bodies in order to procreate, and the hunt intensifies after the entity attacks Jimmy (recurring guest star Aaron Ashmore). |
Episode 4 - ArrowWhile attending a fundraiser, Lois witnesses the Green Arrow (recurring guest star Justin Hartley) snatching a rare diamond necklace off of Martha's neck and vows to find out about the man behind the costume. Clark does some investigating of his own and discovers that the Green Arrow is actually Oliver Queen, who has been stealing from the rich and giving to the poor. Meanwhile, Lex enlists Lionel's help in testing Lana's loyalty. |
Episode 5 - ReunionIn flashbacks, Lex and Oliver (recurring guest star Justin Hartley) are teenagers attending the same prep school, where Oliver and his friends bully Lex and his buddy Duncan (Bryce Hodgson). In order to gain the others' acceptance, Lex beats up Duncan, inadvertently sending him staggering into the path of a speeding car, which kills Duncan. In the present day, Lex and Oliver--whose secret identity is the Green Arrow--return to the school for a reunion and are startled when Oliver's old pals start getting killed in violent and mysterious accidents that somehow point to Duncan. Meanwhile, when Clark sees satellite photos showing that four other craters were created the day he escaped from the Phantom Zone, he realizes that others may have followed him. |
Episode 6 - FalloutClark is thrilled to learn that Raya (recurring guest star Pascale Hutton), the Kryptonian girl who helped him get out of the Phantom Zone, managed to escape as well and is now in Smallville. As the two grow close, Raya shows Clark how to restore power to the Fortress of Solitude. However, Baern (musician Bow Wow), a killer who also escaped from the Zone, threatens both Raya and Clark, seeking revenge for his imprisonment. |
Episode 7 - RageClark learns that the Green Arrow (recurring guest star Justin Hartley)--whose public identity is Oliver Queen--was shot while trying to save a couple from a carjacking, but Oliver denies he was injured. However, when Oliver starts displaying erratic behavior, Clark and Chloe investigate and find out that Oliver is taking a super-drug that helps his body heal itself--but has severe side effects. Meanwhile, Lana makes a shocking discovery that will impact her relationship with Lex. |
Episode 8 - StaticClark learns that a Phantom Zone escapee has landed in Seattle and slaughtered the entire crew of a Taiwanese cargo ship. Upon further investigation, Clark comes face to face with the horrifying phantom, Aldar (professional wrestler Batista), who sucks the bones out of people. Meanwhile, a patient with the ability to travel between planes of existence escapes from LuthorCorp's secret experimental laboratory and seeks revenge on Lex. |
Episode 9 - SubterraneanClark is shocked to discover that his neighbor Jed McNally (John Novak) is holding migrant laborers captive and forcing them to work on his farm. Feeling guilty since he sees himself as the ultimate illegal immigrant, Clark seeks help from Martha to allow a young boy and his mother to stay in the country. |
Episode 10 - HydroAfter Lana confesses to Chloe that she has reservations about marrying Lex due to her lingering feelings for Clark, the gossip columnist for The Daily Planet, Linda Lake (Tori Spelling), writes a story detailing their exact conversation. Determined to prove that she didn't give the story to Lake, Chloe investigates her co-worker and discovers Lake has the ability to turn herself into water, which allows her to secretly eavesdrop for her column. Meanwhile, Lois begins to suspect that Oliver (recurring guest star Justin Hartley) is the Green Arrow and enlists Clark's help to prove it. Series star Tom Welling directed the episode. |
Episode 11 - JusticeIn this special episode, Oliver Queen (recurring guest star Justin Hartley), aka the Green Arrow, sends out for reinforcements--and Bart Allen (recurring guest star Kyle Gallner), aka Impulse; Arthur "AC" Curry (recurring guest star Alan Ritchson), aka Aquaman; and Victor Stone (recurring guest star Lee Thompson Young), aka Cyborg, return to Smallville to help Oliver take down a secret LuthorCorp laboratory. During a break-in at the facility, Bart is captured and tortured by Lex, but when Clark tries to rescue him, he is felled by meteor rock. An alarmed Chloe goes to Oliver for help, and the newly formed league springs into action to rescue Clark and Bart. |
Episode 12 - LabyrinthAfter being attacked, Clark wakes up in a mental asylum and is told he has been there for five years due to his elaborate fantasy that he has alien superpowers. In this bizarre world, Martha is married to Lionel, Chloe is also mentally unstable and Lana has chosen Clark over Lex. Lana begs Clark to agree to a doctor's treatment so they can be together, but when a fellow patient named John Jones (recurring guest star Phil Morris) informs him that the doctor is actually a phantom and Clark needs to kill him in order to return to reality, Clark must make the toughest decision of his life. |
Episode 13 - CrimsonAfter Lois applies lipstick made from red Kryptonite, she becomes overwhelmed with desire for Clark and makes her move. When the two share a kiss, the red kryptonite transfers to Clark and eliminates his inhibitions. Clark then bursts into Lex and Lana's wedding dinner and kidnaps the bride-to-be. |
Episode 14 - TrespassAfter receiving a photograph of herself dressing in her room, Lana realizes that she has a stalker and decides to hide out at a surprising location. Meanwhile, Jimmy (recurring guest star Aaron Ashmore) breaks up with Chloe, believing that she isn't truly over Clark. Chloe is forced to take a hard look at her feelings for her best friend. |
Episode 15 - FreakClark and Chloe discover that Tobias (Greyston Holt), a young man who was blinded during the meteor shower and now has the ability to identify "meteor freaks," is being used by Lex to locate people with special abilities in order to experiment on them. When Lana finds out about Tobias' gift, she fears that he will expose Clark and offers Tobias a cornea transplant in exchange for his silence. However, she is not prepared for Tobias' shocking revelation. Series star Michael Rosenbaum directed the episode. |
Episode 16 - PromiseOn the day of Lex and Lana's wedding, Lex receives a call from a doctor who threatens to tell Lana the truth about her baby. Meanwhile, Lana begins to have second thoughts about marrying Lex. Clark comes to his own realization--he can't let Lana marry Lex--and decides to tell her his secret. But no one is prepared for what happens when Lionel steps in. |
Episode 17 - CombatClark and Chloe discover that Titan (professional wrestler Kane), a Phantom Zone escapee, is the star of a secret fight club that broadcasts bloody battles to the death on the Internet. Sensing a story, Lois decides to investigate on her own but is captured and forced to participate in the fights, with Athena (professional wrestler Ashley), another Phantom Zone fugitive, as her first opponent. Clark reveals his powers so he can fight Titan but is stunned when he is thrown in the ring with Lois instead. |
Episode 18 - ProgenyAfter Lex discovers that Chloe's mother, Moira (Lynda Carter - "Wonder Woman"), has the power to control meteor freaks, he develops a drug to wake her from her catatonic state in an asylum. He then threatens to kill Chloe unless Moira uses her power to help him. Clark helps Chloe break into the asylum to rescue Moira and finally get to know her mother. |
Episode 19 - NemesisAfter Jodi (Emily Holmes), the wife of a Special Forces soldier, explodes a pipe bomb in one of Lex's secret laboratories, Lionel is severely injured, and Lex is taken hostage by the enraged spouse. Claiming Lex kidnapped her missing husband, Jodi threatens to blow up the entire laboratory with Lex inside it unless he tells her where the soldier is. Clark sets out to rescue Lex but is immediately felled by the Kryptonite lining the earthen walls. Lex and Clark realize that the only way they will make it out alive is by helping each other. |
Episode 20 - NoirIn a special "film noir" episode shot partially in black and white, Jimmy (recurring guest star Aaron Ashmore) sees what life in Smallville would have been like in the 1940s. After a secret meeting with Lionel, Lana is shot at the Daily Planet by a mysterious gunman. Jimmy is knocked unconscious while studying photographs of the scene and dreams about a 1940s version of Smallville. In that reality, Lana is a femme fatale who orchestrated the murder of her tycoon husband, Lex; Clark works at the Daily Planet as a reporter; and Lois is a sultry singer working at a bar owned by Lionel. Meanwhile, in the present day, Clark discovers why Lana married Lex. |
Episode 21 - PrototypeLex has been clandestinely trying to turn Wes Keenan (Tahmoh Penikett), a military man who supposedly died fighting in Afghanistan, into a supersoldier by injecting him with DNA pulled from the various meteor freaks Lex has captured. After a corrupt Senator, Burke (Alan C. Peterson), threatens to expose the secret labs, Lex dispatches Wes to kill the Senator, but Lois witnesses the attack and inadvertently becomes the supersoldier's next target. Meanwhile, Clark tries to convince Lana to leave Lex. |
Episode 22 - PhantomUpon discovering that Lionel told Lana he would kill Clark if she didn't marry Lex, Clark goes after Lionel to silence him once and for all. Lana tells Lex she is leaving him. John Jones (recurring guest star Phil Morris) returns to help Clark stop Lex, who is trying to find the last wraith from the Phantom Zone in order to use its DNA to power his army of supersoldiers. When Lois goes to Reeves Dam to search for information on Lex's secret laboratory, she is brutally stabbed by a security guard. And Chloe's secret power is finally revealed. |
