Season 1 Episode Guide
Episode 1 - OutcastsYoung mermaids of the Mako Island pod, Lyla, Nixie and Sirena have the task of keeping trespassers off the magical island. Nixie and Sirena, bored with their job, decide to have fun with a couple of land dwellers, Zac and Cam, who are fishing off the island, and fail to stop them camping overnight on Mako. During the night, as the full moon rises, the mermaids are less than enthused by their duty - they want to join the pod out at sea for the Full Moon celebrations. However, as the moon approaches its zenith the three mermaids enter the sacred Moon Pool to bathe in the moon's powers. During the night, Zac accidentally discovers a secret chamber in the rocky face of Mako's extinct volcano. While he explores inside he unlocks a hidden entrance to the Moon Pool. Zac falls into the bubbling waters, shocking the young mermaids. Luckily he is unconscious. The next morning Zac wakes up on the beach with no memory of what happened after he entered the chamber, and the boys decide to leave the island. But when Zac gets home he discovers he has special powers, and that contact with water transforms him into a merman! The Mermaid Council rules Zac a great threat to the pod, and declares Mako unsafe. As punishment, Sirena, Lyla and Nixie are banished when their pod leaves the island. Just before Aquata leaves Mako, she gives her younger sister, Sirena, her Moon Ring - she may need it. The young mermaids must find a way to fix what they've done, or be outcasts forever. |
Episode 2 - Getting LegsThe Mako Island mermaid pod has left leaving Lyla, Nixie and Sirena as outcasts. To rejoin their pod, the three mermaids must turn Zac from part-time merman to full-time land boy. It's simple, they can catch him, then use their magic to remove his powers. Only problem is... Zac has legs. The mermaids do not. With the power of Sirena's Moon Ring, the mermaids give themselves legs and stumble around the foreign Gold Coast, intent on capturing Zac. They find him at the beach on Surf Life Saving duty with Cam, where Zac has to find ways of not getting wet! In this public setting, Lyla tries to subtly use her powers on Zac. But when Zac spectacularly uses his newfound powers to save a little girl in the water, the mermaids realise their plan may be simple, but not easy. For Zac, the experience is eye opening. Initially his tail was confronting, and an inconvenience he was burdened with. But he now sees it as a gift and is beginning to enjoy the powers that come with it. |
Episode 3 - Meeting RitaThe mermaids are worried about Zac- he may find them and the Moon Pool. Then no mermaid is safe! Attempting to capture Zac in his natural environment, Lyla, Nixie and Sirena follow him to a foreign place... his school. But he is always with his friends, Evie and Cam. To get Zac alone the mermaids use their magic to make him feel ill, but they accidentally manipulate a water fountain, forcing a wet Zac to run off to hide while he transforms into a merman. Luckily, he manages to dry himself off before Evie discovers him with a tail. The mermaids' plan to catch Zac is interrupted when the school principal, Rita Santos, confronts them and confiscates Sirena's Moon Ring. An upset Sirena is determined to get her sister's ring back, so the mermaids tail Rita home to retrieve it. There's no sign of Rita as they wander around the house, but the mermaids are confronted by Posedidon, Rita's 'fisheating' cat... and they discover a secret pool under the house. As the mermaids determine the pool is saltwater, Rita suddenly surfaces, in full mermaid form. Principal Santos is a mermaid! Rita explains that she was banished from her pod for falling in love with a land dweller. Not only does Sirena get her Moon Ring back, but the girls convince a begrudging Rita to help them in their quest to fix Zac. |
Episode 4 - Lyla AloneLyla, Nixie and Sirena use Rita's secret sea entrance to return to land. While leaving they discover another secret cavern, the Grotto, full of sea objects and treasure. Angry that the mermaids are back, a fearful Rita warns them about the ways of land dwellers. But to Nixie and Sirena the land is a world full of new and exciting experiences, like shopping. To Lyla, their legs are a temporary necessity until they can remove Zac's merman powers. Lyla searches for Zac at the Ocean Café, but when a waitress accidentally spills a drink on her, she has only seconds before her tail is on display for all to see. She rushes to the cool room - just before secretly transforming into a mermaid. The cool condensation prevents Lyla from transforming out of fish-form, and when she tries to manipulate the thermostat she only manages to turn the sprinkler system on! Meanwhile, Nixie and Sirena secretly follow Zac's girlfriend, EVIE who is going shopping. Nixie and Evie battle over a prized pair of shoes, and ultimately get banned from the store. Returning to the café, Nixie and Sirena wonder where Lyla is and find her in the cool room. While Sirena distracts the café owner DAVID and his customers with a song, Nixie helps Lyla transform... and walk out of the café on two feet. Feeling sorry for themselves, the mermaids return to Rita's to say goodbye - being on land is too dangerous. But Rita decides to help them find their way on land, and as young mermaids. |
Episode 5 - BlizzardThe threat of rain keeps Lyla, Nixie and Sirena indoors and unable to look for Zac. Nixie decides it's too risky to try to get to Zac and heads out to Mako Island alone. Refusing to simply wait for the rain to clear, Lyla suggests that Sirena uses her Moon Ring to stop the rain. Inexperienced with the Moon Ring's magic, Lyla and Sirena create a blizzard in Rita's secret Grotto and ice over the sea entrance. While trapped in Rita's house, the two young mermaids fall ill with Snow Rash. Meanwhile, Zac is meant to go on a camping trip with his dad. But the rain makes it dangerous for him to go outdoors too. Zac has to find a way to get out of the trip without hurting his Dad's (Dr. Blakely) feelings. Cam is called for help, and he talks Zac into feigning illness. The café owner David arrives at Rita's to deliver some seafood. Worried about the mermaids he calls Dr. Blakely, forcing Lyla and Sirena to try to explain their curious mermaid symptoms... or be taken to hospital. Luckily for Zac his father is busy with the mermaids, and believes his son may have the same disease. With Dr. Blakely ready to take Lyla and Sirena to hospital for tests, Nixie seeks Rita's help and magically uses dried seahorse powder to cure the mermaids' Snow Rash and keep their secret safe. |
Episode 6 - Dolphin TaleZac is still enjoying being a merman and the mermaids are no closer to removing his powers. Lyla believes they need a new strategy - maybe they should become his friend so they can convince him to lose his powers. But Nixie doesn't think Lyla is capable of making friends - she can't even make friends with a dolphin! Unfortunately for Lyla she never learnt to speak dolphin, one of the perks of being a mermaid, and Sirena and Nixie love to make fun of it. But the young mermaids decide to give 'friendship' a try and head to the Ocean Café to find Zac. While Lyla and Sirena follow Zac home to try to get his trust, Nixie decides they are not going to succeed and goes for a swim. David's brother Joe, who delivers seafood to the Ocean Café, has a new boat and takes David out for a spin to show it off. While speeding around on the Broadwater, the boat's fish-finder locates a dolphin... but it's not like any dolphin Joe has seen before and he decides to chase it, while refusing to listen to David's protests. And it's not a dolphin, but Nixie out having fun with dolphins. With Joe closing in, Nixie panics and gets trapped in some netting under the jetty outside Zac's house. Under the impression that Joe is terrorising a dolphin, Zac subtly uses his powers to interfere with Joe's boat, and Lyla secretly uses her powers to help. With everyone distracted, Sirena frees Nixie from the netting and they escape to safety. Back at the café, there's celebrations for teaching Joe a lesson... and the mermaids are on their way to becoming Zac's friends. |
Episode 7 - Zac's Pool PartyEver since he became a merman, Zac struggles with a lot of normal things and it's starting to get to him. His girlfriend, Evie, notices Zac's mood and with Cam's help arranges a pool party to cheer him up. But thanks to the fact that he morphs into a merman at a drop of water, it's one more thing that Zac can't enjoy. To put a halt to Evie's plans he tries to empty the pool, but is thwarted by his dad, Dr. Blakely. Lyla, Nixie and Sirena get themselves invited to the party where they hope to earn Zac's trust. At the party Cam unsuccessfully tries to get closer to Nixie, while Sirena and David enjoy each other's company. When Lyla manages to find Zac alone and offers to hear his troubles, their closeness is noticed by a jealous Evie. She confronts Cam about Zac's relationship with Lyla. Feeling like the meat in the sandwich Cam angrily tells Evie to back off! The tension leads to Cam and Zac having a heated argument. Cam is sick of Zac's selfcenteredness, and Zac thinks Cam is jealous of his new powers. To get even, Cam pushes Zac into the pool. As luck would have it, the mermaids are the only ones to see Zac in his transformed state. When they agree to keep Zac's secret, he finds new allies, and Lyla, Nixie and Sirena are one step closer to getting back to their pod. |
Episode 8 - Zac's Return to MakoThere's going to be a full moon and Lyla, Nixie and Sirena must quickly do something about Zac. If they keep him out of the moonlight, maybe he'll lose his powers - Zac will return to his land-dwelling self and they can return to their pod. Rattled by a disturbing dream about the Moon Pool, Zac decides he can't talk to Cam about it, not after their argument at the party. So Zac goes to Rita's house looking for help from the mermaids, hoping he can trust them. He tells them what he remembers about his Mako Island experience and, without revealing their own secret, the mermaids manage to get Zac to agree to stay out of the moonlight. The mermaids help Zac cover the windows of his room and keep him company during the night. But despite their best efforts the moon's pull is too strong for Zac. As he is touched by the moon's glow, he falls into its spell and is drawn to Mako. The mermaids follow - they have to keep him out of the Moon Pool. Lyla trails him to the secret land entrance, while Nixie and Sirena head for the Moon Pool. In his uncontrollable trance-like state Zac uses his powers against Lyla, but fails to reach the Moon Pool. The next morning, Zac doesn't remember anything after being hit by the first moonbeam. But, the mermaids are deeply shocked to discover the full moon has given him more powers. The mermaids have to do something about Zac, or he could soon have more power than them. |
Episode 9 - The SirenLyla gets an idea while listening to Sirena's beautiful song. If Sirena sings the mermaid's ancient Enchantment Song to Zac, he'll fall under her spell and they'll have the chance to take his powers. It's a risky plan, and without Nixie knowing, Lyla talks Sirena into it. At the Ocean Café, Zac, Evie, Cam and David are cramming for an exam. Evie fears she's going to fail and lose her scholarship. Zac reassures her all will be ok. As they leave the café for school, Lyla sees the opportunity. Sirena starts to sing the Enchantment Song, but accidentally catches David's attention instead of Zac's... and the first person David sees is Nixie. Totally besotted by her, David caters to her every whim and desire. To help Evie, Zac uses his powers to enter Principal Santo's office to get the answers to the exam. When Rita suddenly enters he has to use his new cloaking powers, but Rita see's through his disguise and realises what Zac is up to. Episode 10 - Zac Returns to MakoZac tells the mermaids he's going back to Mako to find out more about what happened to him. Lyla thinks they should go to keep an eye on him, and maybe they'll find out how to remove his powers. Nixie and Sirena think it's best to keep their distance, plus as it's not a full moon he won't be able to open the land entrance. Secretly, Lyla steals a Moon Ring from RITA and uses it to open the hidden land entrance for Zac. But when the Moon Ring's power is drained, Lyla and Zac get trapped inside. Searching for another exit, they find a mysterious Trident symbol. Zac's touch opens an entrance to an infinite chamber of water. As he dives in Zac is immediately transformed into a merman, and the entrance seals behind him. Stuck on the other side Lyla can't help him.
