Episode 3 - The Beastly HunThe sinking of the Lusitania causes a wave of anti-German feeling to sweep the country. When a local tradesman and his family are found to be of German origin, Hudson uses this to vent his frustration at not being able to fight in the war. |
Episode 4 - Women Shall Not WeepDaisy and Edward are planning to get married while he is home from leave and Georgina decides to become a nurse. She leaves to work in a field hospital in France. |
Episode 5 - Tug of WarJanuary 1916. Against a background of patriotic excitement, Hazel Bellamy treats all the servants to a day at the seaside. For Mrs Bridges the cook, it is a time of strain. The cause - a growing relationship between her and a middle-aged admirer. James is home on leave and is increasingly frustrated with how comfortable his army staff job is. Hazel understands his longing to rejoin his regiment and decides to help him. |
Episode 6 - Home FiresClassic period drama. Lady Prudence and Hazel disagree about a tea party for wounded officers which is to be held at Eaton Place. The reappearance of an old flame throws Rose into a state of confusion. |

Fascinated by his experiences of war, Hazel accompanies him for a night of theatre and dancing that ends in romance. James and Georgina meet for dinner in France. Georgina breaks down and tells James that she worries for him. |

Episode 11 - Missing Believed KilledJanuary 1918. For weeks all at 165 Eaton Place have been living under a cloud of uncertainty - is James Bellamy, posted missing at Passchendale, alive or dead? Trooper Norton returns from France with James's personal effects. He tells how they were separated during the battle when the enemy overran their lines - and how German soldiers had been reporting shooting badly injured Allied troops. |
Episode 12 - Facing Fearful OddsHazel has made a new friend Virginia Hamilton, the attractive widow of a Naval officer. However, their friendship is blighted when it is learned that her son Michael, a sub-lieutenant in the Royal Navy, is about to be court-martialled. |
Episode 13 - Peace Out of PainThe estate of Rose's fiancee who died in battle is settled. She is to receive 1200 pounds. Richard falls in love with Virginia Hamilton when she visits London. He proposes to her. James is sullen after his return home from the war. He and Hazel argue and Hazel succumbs to a flu virus which has tragic results. |
